Overview

Instrumentation Design Engineer (M/F)

Location: Visp, Switzerland

Context

As part of long-term engineering projects with a major international player in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, we are seeking an Instrumentation Design Engineer to support the design of complex production facilities operating under stringent regulatory requirements.

Integrated within the client's Engineering teams, you will contribute to the design and development of instrumentation systems, from process requirements analysis through to the production of technical documentation required for project execution.

This position is primarily focused on Detailed Design Engineering. We are looking for an engineer capable of independently performing engineering studies and producing technical deliverables, rather than a profile exclusively specialized in commissioning, start-up, or maintenance activities.

Your Responsibilities

Instrumentation Design & Engineering

  • Analyze P&IDs and process requirements to define instrumentation needs.
  • Design instrumentation systems for industrial and pharmaceutical facilities.
  • Select and specify measurement and control instruments, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, and other process parameters.
  • Define technical characteristics of instruments according to operating conditions and process requirements.
  • Contribute to the definition of instrumentation architectures and interfaces with control systems.

Technical Deliverables

  • Develop and maintain instrument datasheets and instrument indexes.
  • Prepare and update I/O lists, cable lists, and instrument lists.
  • Produce loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, and associated technical documentation.
  • Prepare material take-offs (MTOs) and equipment quantity reports.
  • Ensure consistency between P&IDs, instrument specifications, technical lists, and design documentation.
  • Update documentation based on project changes and comments arising from design reviews.

Coordination & Quality

  • Collaborate with Process, Electrical, Automation, Construction, and other Engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in design reviews and follow up on technical comments.
  • Review engineering studies and documentation before release for execution.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, GMP requirements, and applicable safety regulations.
  • Contribute to resolving technical issues encountered during design and project execution phases.

Your Profile

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Instrumentation, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Approximately 4 to 20 years of experience in industrial instrumentation and design engineering.
  • Proven experience in detailed design engineering for industrial facilities, ideally within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, or process industries.
  • Ability to independently produce the main technical deliverables of an instrumentation package.
  • Strong understanding of P&IDs, field instrumentation, control loops, and interfaces with automation systems.
  • Experience in GMP-regulated environments is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of ATEX environments and process facilities would be an advantage.
  • Professional proficiency in English is required; German language skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.

Technical Environment

  • COMOS (Siemens): an advantage
  • EPLAN: an advantage
  • P&IDs, instrument datasheets, instrument indexes, I/O lists, cable lists, loop diagrams, and MTOs
  • Instrumentation systems and DCS/PLC interface
